Write:OutLoud

This website helps students to draft and edit their writing. When the student types the words the letters and words are read back to the student. The sentences and paragraphs are also read back. The students can phonetically type their passages. When editing, the students can use a spell checker that allows the students to hear their choices to replace the words. This helps the students to pick the right word by hearing it instead of just looking at it. It also helps to correctly replace homonyms.

This website is great for students who:

  • Are reluctant to write
  • Show moderate grammar and spelling challenges
  • Writes better with auditory support
Teachers can train in 30 minutes with the software. Pricing ranges from $55 each for 50+ computers to $84 for one computer. There is also a building license that is unlimited for $499.

I've realized that even though the programs that we are used to like " Word" may not be enough for editing for students with disabilities. I never thought about a program reading back the different options in spell checker.
